Train accessories, as opposed to generic ones, are made by the manufacturer that manufactured the train, and not by some importer from another country. While you can find some vendors that claim to be "OEM" suppliers, most do not carry original train and railway accessories. Most of what they stock are aftermarket products that are not produced by the original company and are sold under their own brand names.
Some companies do make products that can be used for both trains and rails. These types of companies may be more expensive than others. They usually will have a large selection that is available at reasonable prices, but you may have to order some specialty items to get a special discount. For those that prefer to buy one thing rather than the entire train set, this could be an option. You want to make sure you are getting the exact item you need, but saving money can help to accomplish this goal.
The manufacturers of train accessories that are commonly referred to as OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) are those that actually make and manufacture the products, not individuals that just happen to be selling them. They have a reputation built and maintained through years of providing quality parts for a price that is affordable. Their name is known in the industry and they have a history to keep.
Not all Original Equipment Manufacturer train accessories are limited to just trains. Many manufacturers make lawn mowers, trimmers, leaf blowers and garden tools, among other garden and yard care accessories. If you do not see something you want at one of these retailers, it is likely that they make other accessories as well. Oftentimes, they will have a website so you can order accessories that are not found in the store.
Sometimes the retailers will also sell OEM parts for model railroading trains and tracks. Since the manufacturer is the one that makes and sells the parts, the retailer is required by law to sell only those parts that come directly from the original manufacturer. You may find some limited choices of parts but they will still be made of high quality materials and will be able to withstand the harshest of conditions. If you choose to purchase these train accessories at a local retailer, you must inspect the items carefully to make sure they are indeed OEM parts and not some cheap imitation of the same quality as the OEM products.
Most people do not realize it but there are companies out there that are making replica accessories and parts. These companies do not offer the same warranties or guarantees as the legitimate OEM companies. While you may be able to find a few limited choices in the limited selection of OEM parts, there is a strong chance that these parts will not stand up to the wear and tear of constant usage. In addition, the parts may not be compatible with the model of train you own, which means purchasing a new set of track and train accessories can become very costly.
